Concrete is the material of choice for basements and foundations. By adding EPS (expanded polystyrene) plastic foam to the forming process insulating concrete forms or “ICFs” were created, making ICF basements a valuable part of any new home. ICF Foundations are revolutionizing the global residential, commercial, institutional and industrial building industries. ICF construction has been growing at 25-30% per year for quite some time.
What is an ICF Foundation / Exterior wall?
Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) are a hybrid block forming system that is a combination of the flat wall and waffle grid systems. The forms are 16″ high and 4′ long with a unique modified flat wall interior configuration. The dense 1.5 lbs. net cured weight foam face shells are made of molded expanded polystyrene averaging 2.6″ thick. The perimeter joint design is tongue and groove with interlocking blocks and notches for alignment and added strength. The units lock together somewhat like Lego bricks and create a form for the structural walls or floors of a building. ICF construction has become commonplace for both low rise commercial and high performance residential construction as more stringent energy efficiency and natural disaster resistant building codes are adopted.
